My Son, Whom I Have Loved Dearly

Being a mother is one of the best things that have happened to me. I have a son, and if anyone had told me that it was possible to love a person that much, I would never have believed them. The beautiful thing about being a mom to this incredible human being is that it took all of my life and changed IT.  As human beings, we tend to have mental boxes for everything and everyone in our lives. We sometimes make the mistake of trying to slide new people into boxes, trying to get them to fit our already fixed life. A baby does not fit in. They do not care about your boxes or your fixed life. They disrupt your life, and it is one of the best things ever. A new life to love and cherish.  I have always wanted a child. Boy or girl, it didn’t matter as long as I had a child I could pour my all into. I didn’t wait till I gave birth before discovering my baby sex, I wanted to know. I was excited when I discovered that I was pregnant. It was a dream come true for me, and I couldn’t wa

What is the most amazing thing you overheard because people didn't think you understood their language?

“Charge her double. That idiot foreigner doesn't know the difference.” I was on a trip to Japan one year ago for New Year's Eve, and I had booked one of those tube beds in Tokyo because I was only going to be there for two nights so I figured it wouldn't matter. Unfortunately they called me and said the space was no longer available just as I was getting out of the airport. Panicked, I called every hotel in the area but every one was booked. It was the day before New Year's Eve. Now I was far from fluent but I found myself getting around okay with what I learned in four years of classes in high school. For those not familiar with Tokyo, it's an extremely dense city. The areas with tall buildings extend out really far from the city center. I ended up driving way out to the edge of the “suburbs” which were basically just extremely dense two-story houses with little space in between. The first place I arrived at was a motel with red flashing lights. I went

How did your high school crush end up in life?

My high school crush wasn't a crush. I was deeply in love with her. I have never forgotten her. I think of her each and every day. I fantasize often about our time together and when we were exploring new boundaries, and the passion we had for each other. How I felt about her was far more than any crush. We parted after high school and I dated other women, but I could never feel anything for any of them. They were just someone to spend time with but never someone who I wanted to be with forever. I always thought of my sweet 16. Her name is Bonnie. She went on to date other guys but we never stopped caring for each other. I still have the picture she gave me after her graduation; it”s my wallpaper for my iPad. Each time I turn it on I see her as she was over half a century ago. I smile and think,  “There's my sweet 16, god she is so beautiful!” Then I turn and see her sitting on the couch and say “Thank god I never have to wonder 'What if?’” You see we married 52

What is one thing you caught your child doing that you wish you had never seen?

I came home from work one day to a horrendous smell. Following my nose to the kids' bathroom, I saw my daughter, then maybe 9, with a Barbie doll. Barbie was naked, and her hair had been chopped off. My daughter was holding Barbie by her little neck over the sink, and had a lighter at Barbie's foot. "Talk," my daughter screamed, as Barbie's foot melted into the sink. "I told you to talk!" My first thought was that my daughter should not have had access to a lighter, so I asked her where she got it. "Oh, it was with daddy's cigarettes," she told me, sweet as could be. "What are you doing with Barbie?" I asked her, trying to keep my voice calm. My little daughter's eyes hardened and she nearly snarled "She won't give up enemy secrets, so I have to torture her!" This was out of character for my daughter, and we were not a household that condoned torture, under any circumstances, so that really took me by

How do I tell my parents that I know they put a camera in my room?

Take a small, clear bag and fill it with a certain white substance. Hide that bag somewhere in your room. Every morning before you leave for school, and every afternoon when you get home, take out the bag of white substance, and cut a line. Take a piece of paper, (like a dollar bill), roll it up, and pretend to snort the substance. You don’t actually have to snort it. You can do this trick where you use the side of your hand to brush the substance off to the side. Just make sure you do all of this in the camera’s sight line. Repeat this process for as long as necessary. Eventually, your parents will see you do this on camera and think you’re snorting cocaine. They’ll go to your room, find your bag of “cocaine”, and pull it out. But what they’ll find instead is a bag of flour or sugar, and a note from you that says, “I know you put a camera in my room.” The thrill of spying on you will be gone, and hopefully they’ll remove the camera. Either way, they’ll know you k
